After taking a beating on social media and in the press earlier this month for his views on homosexuality and gay marriage, Phil Robertson, patriarch of the Duck Dynasty clan and star of the hit A&E reality TV series is again coming under fire for his beliefs.
In an old video that recently surfaced online, Robertson is seen speaking to a church congregation, and giving dating and marriage advice to the young men in the audience. The video, shown below, was shot in 2009, and features Robertson advocating that men marry girls as young as 15 or 16 years old. With parental consent, the age for marriage in Robertson’s home state of Louisiana is 16.
[Good wives] got to where they getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting till they get to be about 20 years old before they marry them. Look, you wait till they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16.Â
These comments have surfaced only a few days after A&E made the decision to allow Robertson back on the Duck Dynasty show. He had been suspended after his views on gay marriage caused a social media backlash against Robertson, the show, and the television network.
Robertson married his wife, Kay, when she was only 16 years old. Recently, their marriage was featured on an episode of the show, when Kay received a wedding ring from Robertson as a Christmas present.

Earlier this afternoon, a Tweet sent by Air Canada to one of its customers caused a frenzy on Twitter, due to the airline’s policy dealing with reissuing travel vouchers.
It all started when Calgary resident and author Chris Turner Tweeted to to Air Canada to ask about the policy on reissuing a travel voucher to a family member – namely, his wife. The airline responded and said that doing so would only be possible if his wife had taken his name – which she had not.
Obviously, this did not sit well with Turner, who was now stuck purchasing a full-price ticket for a fare he could have used a voucher for, had his wife not kept her name after the walk down the aisle.
Here’s how it played out:
@theturner Hi Chris, vouchers can only be transferred to another family member before travel if they have the same family name. /cc

@AirCanada Yup, got it. Maybe let your bosses know that those of us who are not married to June Cleaver find this deeply insulting. — Chris Turner (@theturner) December 30, 2013
So I’ll have to charge this flight, carry cost, reimburse later. Can I expense the interest to @aircanada‘s Dept of 1950s Preservation? — Chris Turner (@theturner) December 30, 2013
Â
@AirCanada And yet data systems in every other facet of our lives overcome this hurdle. e.g. I’ll be charging flight to a JOINT credit card. — Chris Turner (@theturner) December 30, 2013
Â
@AirCanada Noted. You can see how this institutionalizes a lower quality of service to women who kept their maiden names, though, yes? — Chris Turner (@theturner) December 30, 2013
And it didn’t take long before scores of people jumped on top of Air Canada for their outdated policies.
@AirCanada Welcome to the 1950s, Air Canada travelers!

Hey Air Canada, women are not property. pic.twitter.com/4pEOYjby3a

.@VJsapps @AirCanada my wife didn’t take my last name. you’re telling me she’s not family Air Canada?
— curtisandrews (@curtisandrews) December 30, 2013
So now @AirCanada is saying if wife doesnt take husband last name, they are not family according to Air Canada rules. Hmnn

The airline has not yet addressed this issue via its Twitter account, other than replying directly to Turner’s questions.

If the new consoles like the XBox One and the Play Station 4 make you homesick for the systems of your childhood, you’re going to like what the folks at the Internet Archive have put together for you.
Yes, the same people who brought you the Wayback Machine, for delving through pages and pages of Geocities and Tripod treasures from the 90s, have teamed up to bring back some popular games from consoles of the past.
In an initiative dubbed The Internet Archive Console Living Room, the Internet Archive has resurrected games from five vintage systems and made them available to play in modern web browsers.
Consoles that currently have titles available to play are:
- Atari 2600
- Atari 7800 ProSystem
- ColecoVision
- Magnavox Odyssey
- Astrocade
The Internet Archive cautions that these games are best played in the most current version of web browser, and sound has not yet been enabled, although they hope to add sound features soon. Where possible, they have provided manuals and directions for gameplay.
With hundreds of titles available, spending the week between Christmas and New Years in 2013 can seem just like it did in the 1980s – glued to a glowing screen, playing games as long as you could!

In October, Reddit user zcypher had an appendectomy at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, California. The final bill for the procedure and his hospital stay came to over $55,000, and although a large portion of that amount was covered by his family’s insurance plan, he was still left with an $11,000 charge.
Last night, he posted a copy of the bill to Reddit, where it quickly shot to the front page, receiving over 10,000 comments, and 230,000 views of the bill overnight.
“I never truly understood how much healthcare in the US costs until I got appendicitis in October,†he wrote. “I’m a 20 year old guy. Thought other people should see this to get a real idea of how much an unpreventable illness costs in the US.â€
The thread quickly filled with stories of other high medical bills that Redditors had received, as well as general negative comments about the state of healthcare in the United States.
A number of Redditors are also urging zcypher to fight the charges with the hospital, to see if he can get them reduced or eliminated entirely. Redditor 13special wrote:
First, the hospital is obviously charging you too much. Healthcare Blue Book has an appendectomy at $10,092 (far short of the 55k that they are trying to charge you). AETNA negotiated for the whole thing down to $17,581 but if you hassle the hospital you might be able to get closer to the $10,092 that it should cost.
Sutter General Hospital is part of the Sutter Health system in Northern California, and Sutter Health has faced scrutiny lately for anti-competitive practices, including high charges for inpatient services. An antitrust class action lawsuit filed against the system last year, and dismissed by a judge earlier this year, has been reopened recently.
Earlier this month, the Sutter system was the subject of a New York Times article about the rising cost of healthcare procedures and supplies.  The article cites research done by the California Nurse’s Association that shows prices at Sutter’s hospitals are 40 to 70 percent higher than competing hospitals for similar services.
According to Sutter Health spokesperson Gary Zavoral, the charges shown on the bill are an accurate representation of the costs for an emergency appendectomy procedure.
However, Zavoral notes that, “discounts or considerations can be made on an individual basis,†and recommends that patients work with hospital system’s patient advocates to address issues like these.
“There is a lot of availability when it comes to those with limited finances,†said Zavoral.
While he doesn’t believe this is the first time one of his hospital’s bills has been shared on social media, Zavoral referred to the number of hits that the image received as “amazing.â€
“It shows the power of Reddit, this might just be the beginning of people sharing things like this around,†he said.
Zavoral said he would work with the hospital’s billing department to reach out to the Reddit user regarding his charges.

If you’re a die-hard Netflix streaming fan with some time to kill over the next few days, you might want to consider watching a few of the many titles that will be expiring from the online streaming service on January 1.
Thanks to a number of clever folks over at Reddit, the list below has been assembled. It shows all known titles that will no longer be available after this month. This list was put together manually, because earlier this year, Netflix removed the ability to display when a title expired from its system.
Because of Netflix’s system, all we know is that these titles will expire for some amount of time after midnight on December 31. We don’t know how long that time will be – it could be forever, or it might just be a couple of days or a few weeks until a new contract is in place.
