A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck off of the Pacific coast of New Zealand early this morning.
The sharp temblor caused power outages and light damage to some buildings, and is the latest in a string of quakes to strike the country since Friday.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centered 57 kilometers south-southwest of the capital, Wellington. Cracks in buildings in that city, as well as other nearby areas have been reported. In addition, many buildings have had glass windows broken out in the quake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued an advisory that quakes of this size could trigger destructive tsunamis along coasts of countries located within a hundred of kilometers of the quake’s epicenter.
